A Moving Story…The Rest of the Story

I

f you read the April Scholz Report, you know that at the time I wrote it, we were stuck in moving limbo. The day that the newsletter went out, the limbo was over. As of April 12, two weeks after our initial move-in date, we finally moved in. received more than 60 responses to the newsletter, and was amazed by the number of people that have similar stories to tell about their moving experiences. I was also asked a number of questions about the story.

  • Yes, this is a true story. We lived it.

  • Did we move? The move did happen, and we are settled in. In hind sight, it worked out fine for all concerned. Just about every emotion bubbled up during the two weeks…despair, anguish, joy, triumph, anger, sympathy, empathy. We laughed, we cried--you get the picture.

  • One of my clients asked if I got angry. Yes, I did get angry. Once. On Easter weekend the natural gas was shut off to our house because of a gas company error…and we awoke that Saturday to a cold house with no hot water. Charlotte set a record of 21 degrees Fahrenheit on Easter morning so it was kind of vital to get it turned back on. It took 14 phone calls and 10 hours on Saturday to get it back on. By the end of the day, my daughter said that she had only seen me that angry one other time as long as we have known each other, and was amazed that I could still deal semi-rationally with the people on the other end of the phone.

  • One of the ways I was able to keep my cool was to keep focus on the big picture. What is the big picture? Let me explain. Perhaps it will resonate with you.

Have you heard of the GAS pedal?

The illustration depicts Goals, Attitudes and Skills surrounded by Purpose as the pedal. In order to take action it takes developing the right Skills and Knowledge (the what to, when to and how to), the right attitudes (the want to and the why to) and apply them to a written goals plan. The ingredient that makes it all work is the P: your purpose.

My purpose is to help others get what they want. My goals are in harmony with the purpose. My actions sometimes fall short. I work to make sure that my on-purpose time exceeds those times when I am off-purpose. Increasing my batting average or the average time I am living my purpose is an area that I constantly have to work on.

Some goals are bigger than others. I call these BHAG’s, Big Hairy Audacious Goals. I have 5 BHAG’s. Getting back to the moving story, one of my BHAG’s is to be debt free by the time I am 55 years old. I don’t want to owe anything to anyone. My wife and I share in this goal and are actively pursuing it. The specific action steps include the elimination of a mortgage payment, reducing our property taxes and restructuring our finances. We have several of the steps complete as of the move. There are many more steps to getting there, but the steps have been planned out and we are on our way.

Thank you for all of the supportive e-mails, phone calls and kind words. We made it through and learned a few things in the bargain.

Returning to my coaching role, I want to ask you some questions. Do you have a purpose, written down and expressed? How much of your time do you spend on-purpose? What are your BHAG’s? Are they written down or locked in your head? What progress have you made towards completion of those goals? Would a coach help you get there?

Do you wonder if your behaviors are helping or hurting you?

A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.
